From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with the kind of kindness and warmth that feels like being welcomed into a friend’s home. It set the tone for what became a wonderful evening. If you have one chance to dine at Dante, the tasting menu is the only way to go.

Our menu wall remains one of the most meaningful spaces in our home. It captures the memories of our family dining experiences and naturally sparks conversation whenever guests gather around our table.
The inspiration began at Smyth in Chicago, where menus are displayed as art. Instead of tucking our menus away in drawers, we began framing them and integrating them as part of our dining room décor.
We’re often asked what happens when we revisit a restaurant and receive a new menu. We simply update the frames. Some now hold multiple layers with the most recent experience displayed on top.
This refresh included:

• FZN by Björn Frantzén
• Row on 45
And to our friends at Row on 45 — we cannot wait to refresh again, this time celebrating your long overdue third star.

A fun challenge we kicked off last week: cooking our way through our cookbook collection, one new recipe at a time. Snowed in on Sunday, we leaned into comfort and made another gratin, this time a spinach gratin from Vegetable Simple by Eric Ripert. We used spinach from our The Chef’s Garden box, and it was the perfect cozy, nourishing way to wrap up the weekend.

Sunday was Cookbook To Table: From Our Collection.
Spinach Gratin from Eric Ripert’s Vegetable Simple

A fun challenge we kicked off last week: cooking our way through our cookbook collection, one new recipe at a time. Snowed in on Sunday, we leaned into comfort and made another gratin, this time a spinach gratin from Vegetable Simple by Eric Ripert. We used spinach from our The Chef’s Garden box, and it was the perfect cozy, nourishing way to wrap up the weekend.

This is the start of a new Weekend Round Up series. Real weekends, good food, and what we’re actually up to. Also check our Stories to see what Carmine was up to at Table 5.

Being longtime fans of SheWolf, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the opening of its much-anticipated sister restaurant. The moment Medusa opened just a few doors down, we were there at the first opportunity. Let us say this clearly, Medusa did not disappoint.

Naturally, we tried as much of the menu as we possibly could. One of our favorite moments came courtesy of Emma. Her standout dish was the panelle, which confidently declared “falafel.” Chef Anthony Lombardo happened to stop by our table and took a moment to explain why her instinct was spot-on. Emma was fully validated.

Moments like that are why we love dining this way as a family. Watching Emma connect flavors across cultures recognizing similarities, asking questions, building her palate is one of the greatest joys of Jabri Fine Dining.

The proximity between the two restaurants is a stones throw. We went in curious whether Medusa would compete with SheWolf. Instead, we found that they complement each other beautifully. Same warm hospitality, same thoughtful execution, two distinct culinary identities. Medusa has officially earned its place in our rotation, and we’re already looking forward to our return.

We knew we couldn’t leave Dubai without experiencing Chaf Salam Dakkak’s food and we’re so glad we did. Chef Salam Dakkak’s cooking is deeply comforting and exactly what
we needed. Sufret Maryam translates to “Maryam’s Dining Table,” and that’s exactly how it feels: warm, welcoming, and meant to be shared.

Palestinian flavors, elevated without losing their heart. We ordered all our favorites: falafel, fatet eggplant (Kira’s forever favorite), cheese rolls, musakhan rolls, hummus, and hummus bel lahme. Every bite felt familiar and special at the same time.

Trèsind (or, as we lovingly call it, Trèsind OG) is firmly planted on our Dubai repeat list. On this trip to Dubai, we had the joy of dining at both Tresind Studio (now holding three Michelin stars) and returning to Trèsind and we can confidently say there is more than enough space and love in our hearts for both.

We were also fortunate enough to meet Himanshu Saini. Over the years, dining at Trèsind and Tresind Studio has played a meaningful role in developing our understanding of Indian cuisine expanding our palates, deepening our appreciation for
regional ingredients, and helping us taste beyond what we once thought we knew. That brief exchange reinforced what we’ve felt at the table time and again: his work doesn’t
just feed you, it educates you, leaving you more curious, more confident, and more connected to the cuisine with every visit.

While we truly don’t want to compare the two restaurants, what stood out most at Trèsind “OG” beyond what may very well be the most mouthwatering Indian food you’ll ever eat was the level of guest interaction. The team doesn’t just serve you; they invite you into the experience. We left with an actual grocery list of ingredients we’re now hunting down at our local Indian grocer: tomato rasam, wild mushroom chai, and more.
And the moment we’re back in our home kitchen, we’ll be experimenting with making lavasa bread, wish us luck.

Both Trèsind Studio and Trèsind OG are extraordinary in their own ways. But for a restaurant we return to again and again, for comfort layered with creativity, for flavors that linger long after the last bite Trèsind OG will always be on repeat.

We’re longtime fans of Orfali Bros, so despite some renovation-related confusion this trip (we’ll be back soon), it was a genuine pleasure to be greeted by Chef Mohamad
Orfali himself upon arrival. There’s something special about watching chefs champion one another and build a culinary ecosystem rooted in generosity and shared success and we’re cheering loudly from the sidelines.

Before we even sat down, local chefs we spoke with had already set expectations: the food is pure flavor bombs, and they weren’t wrong. MANĀO delivers dish after dish that
is unapologetically bold, layered, and deeply satisfying.

Moonrise is an absolute gem. An intimate, 12-seat chef’s counter where the experience feels immediate and intentional from the moment you sit down. At its core, Moonrise tells the story of Dubai’s diverse culinary landscape. Chef Solemann draws inspiration from his Middle Eastern roots and his upbringing in Dubai, creating elevated comfort food that consistently surpasses expectation. Roots and the fattoush ceviche absolutly were mind blowing.

Chef Solemann and the entire Moonrise team were extraordinary. Sitting so close to the action allowed us to feel fully part of the experience, and we loved every second of it. We could have talked with the Moonrise team for hours. Next time, we’ll be booking the later seating, with full intentions of officially closing the restaurant down for the night (as we have a habit of doing). Moonrise is exactly that kind of place.

One thing we can’t help but say is we would love to see a Moonrise cookbook. The stories, flavors, and cultural layers behind these dishes deserve to live far beyond the counter, and this is a menu we would happily return to again and again. Until next time.

One of the experiences we most looked forward to this trip was the Chef’s Table at City Social and without hesitation, it exceeded every expectation. Carmine informed Emma that when we reach the next chapter of life, winters spent in Dubai, she’ll find her parents spending their Saturday nights right here, seated at the Chef’s Table.

Choosing a standout dish feels nearly impossible because, quite honestly, everything was sheer perfection. That said, the ‘fish and chips’ deserves special mention if only because it will forever ruin the classic version for us. In the unofficial Jabri Fine Dining culinary dictionary, quotation marks signal a reimagining so transformative that the original will never be as exciting. Forever will we flash back to City Social’s ‘fish and chips’ whenever eating the classic.

The wine pairings were equally exceptional, we even snapped a picture of few of the labels, already earmarked for our collection. One thing we rarely comment on, but feel compelled to here, is value. In our opinion and based on extensive global comparisons, the City Social Chef’s Table with wine pairing is exceptionally well-priced for the caliber of cuisine, experience, and service delivered.

The evening concluded on one of the most clever and genuinely fun dessert experiences we’ve ever encountered: the City Social Ice Cream Game. Five unmarked white ice creams, each concealing a different flavor, with the challenge being to identify them correctly. Naturally, all three of us competed and Emma won. We couldn’t have been prouder, not just because she won, but because it perfectly reflects what we believe in. Take your kids to great restaurants. Let them taste, question, and explore. Developing young palates with extraordinary flavors isn’t indulgence, it’s education, curiosity, and confidence served one spoonful at a time.

Smoked Room Dubai is one of those dining experiences that feels immersive from the moment you step inside. This intimate 14-seat fire omakase concept has been airlifted directly from Madrid to Dubai, now onto the rooftop of St. Regis Gardens.

If there were an award for most on-theme restaurant, Smoked Room would win it effortlessly. The aroma of smoke is constant but refined, never overpowering, and thoughtfully woven into every course. One of the most striking design elements is the
suspended mirror above the counter. It’s one thing to have a front-row seat at a chef’s table, but seeing every cut, stir, and finish reflected from above adds an entirely new dimension. It’s mesmerizing and unlike anything we’ve experienced before.

Dessert was equally impressive. The chocolate and miso dish stood out for its extraordinary texture and balance. Even with Emma’s phenomenal photography skills, this was one dish that simply refused to be fully captured on camera; it must be experienced in person to be appreciated.

And in true Smoked Room fashion, the drama doesn’t end with dessert. Even the bill arrives cloaked in smoke. A final, playful reminder that every detail here is intentional.

Trèsind Studio, one of the two (and frankly, should be three) three-Michelin-starred restaurants in Dubai, truly lived up to the hype of fabulousness, delivering an experience as refined as it was memorable.

The tasting menu was structured by region, guiding us through India’s extraordinary geographic and culinary diversity. Before each new chapter of the meal, a beautifully detailed topographic map was presented tableside, grounding the dishes in place and history. Ingredients were introduced in context, what each region is known for, how climate and culture shape flavor turning the experience into a lesson as much as a meal. As a family that dines not only for exceptional food but also for education and cultural understanding, this resonated deeply with us.

This was not simply a modern take on Indian cuisine, but a decidedly luxurious one. With very limited seating and what often feels like a near one-to-one guest-to-chef ratio, every detail felt personal and intentional.

We left with a beautifully designed menu booklet, one that belongs in every U.S. global studies classroom. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal has been on our Dubai wish list for quite some time. This is not a restaurant you simply walk into, rather it’s one you arrive at. Tucked within Atlantis The Royal, the journey begins with a dramatic elevator ascent, water cascading around you, before revealing a discreet, almost secretive entrance.

Inside, the space is refined dark, elegant, and quietly cinematic. The menu, however, is what anchors everything. Rooted in historic British recipes dating back centuries, some as far as the 1300s, each dish feels thoughtfully reimagined rather than reinvented. As a family that enjoys a bit of food anthropology, this experience was genuinely fun. We opted for the tasting menu, feeling it would offer the most complete view of the restaurant’s perspective.

And of course, no experience would be complete without Carmine leaning fully into the moment, his staging very much continuing. He took a turn at tableside service of the famous Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Trolley dessert, and Emma and I were genuinely impressed.

Set within The Ritz-Carlton Dubai, the restaurant is framed by a stunning beach backdrop, adding a sense of calm and place that makes the entire experience feel effortlessly authentic.

Those who follow Jabri Fine Dining know one thing about us: we’re not buffet people. While Amaseena’s lavish buffet is what they are known for, their classic à la carte menu is where the experience truly shines for us thoughtfully prepared, familiar dishes executed with care and consistency.

If there is one flaw to be found, it exists outside the dining room. While currently holding two Michelin stars, ROW on 45 is undeniably operating at a three-star level. Until the guide catches up, an unofficial third star from Jabri Fine Dining will have to suffice.

One dish, in particular, the Kutchan 540 potato was extraordinary in both taste and story. Snow-aged for 540 days in a Hokkaido snow cellar, this potato is prized for its extraordinary sweetness and silk-like texture. At ROW on 45, it’s presented as a refined nod to the comfort of a British jacket potato. Finished with caviar (because, as we like to say, everything is better with caviar), it’s a dish we’ll be dreaming about for a long time. We were especially honored to experience it knowing this potato is served exclusively at ROW on 45 outside of Japan.

Our first visit during daylight, the second in the evening, both glorious. This visit also coincided with Emma’s birthday yesterday, which we seem to be extending the celebration over a few days.
What stood out most on a return visit was consistency. The pacing is measured, the
technique assured, and the restraint unwavering. Hōseki doesn’t rely on surprise or spectacle. It operates with quiet confidence, allowing the craft to speak for itself.
Chef Sugiyama’s engagement was thoughtful and sincere. He remembered Emma from our previous visit and took evident pleasure in welcoming a young diner with a true appreciation for sushi back to the counter. Throughout the meal, he engaged her in quiet conversation, reinforcing the idea that respect for the craft and for those eager to learn transcends age. On a recent layover in Chicago, we realized it had been far too long since our last visit.
Some restaurants stay vivid in your memory for a reason, and Smyth is one of them. With this year’s Michelin Guide reshaping the landscape, Smyth remains Chicago’s lone three-star an achievement that feels both rare and well deserved.
From the first course, the level of detail is unmistakable. Every dish is precise and luxurious, thoughtful without ever being overworked. A black walnut cured quail egg, caviar and pumpkin seed, Vermont Quail & Malted Milk Bread delivers depth and balance in just a few bites. The venison royal is rich and composed, while the Dungeness crab with kabocha pumpkin manages to be comforting and intricate at the same time. Zaytinya is a restaurant we’ve eaten at more times than we can count, and the NYC location is our absolute favorite. The flavors are vibrant, comforting, and somehow still refined, perfect for our family Mediterranean pallet with the elevation that Zatinya brings to traditional staples. Masa NYC is known for its strict no-photography policy, which keeps the focus squarely on the experience without distractions. This was our second visit, and while the room remains as disciplined and serene as ever, meeting Chef Masa this time added an entirely new layer to the experience.

One of the most fascinating parts of the evening was learning about tuna anatomy specifically how the tendons work and how they’re transformed into Suji aka tuna bacon.

To say Eleven Madison Park was everything we imagined feels like an understatement. For years, we were a house divided; Kira determined to experience this institution, and Carmine refusing as long as it remained fully vegan. When the news broke this year that the menu was evolving, we were both ecstatic.

If there’s one thing Emma loves as much as caviar, it’s truffles, preferably white truffles. So when Oak & Reel hosted their third annual Barolo & Truffles Dinner last night, there was absolutely no chance she was missing it again (she’s still salty about last year’s field-trip conflict).

These evenings are always a highlight for us. For a family that usually dines as a trio, we absolutely love the communal seating that adds a different kind of energy, easy conversations, shared excitement, and a table full of people brought together for the same reason. You walk in for the food, but you leave with full stomachs, full hearts, and a few new friends along the way.

Detroit’s dining scene has been on fire lately and we’re here for it (check out the new merch). One restaurant that’s been sitting high on our list to try for months is Marrow, and we finally made it in for dinner. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was going to be a wonderful evening.

Marrow isn’t just a restaurant, it’s equal parts butcher shop and neighborhood gathering place. The space feels effortlessly stylish yet approachable, where the aroma steak mingles with the hum of conversation. It’s the kind of place that celebrates good food, good people, and genuine hospitality.

If you don’t leave Barú, Detroit’s best Latin-Caribbean restaurant, feeling happier, more energized, and like you just stepped out of the warmth of the Caribbean, something is seriously wrong with you 😊.

Before we even get to the food, we have to talk about the space because this restaurant is simply gorgeous. Imagine bright Caribbean mural art combined with luxurious gilded gold accents, posh velvet seating, and even plates that are on theme. Not one detail was missed. From the moment you walk in, the entrance alone makes every guest feel like a VIP.

Now, let’s talk food. Everything is wonderful, but our current favorites are the ceviche, empanadas, fish tacos, and of course, the jerk Cornish hen. Barú will never be a place where we can finish everything and that’s part of its charm. The menu is just too fun, too flavorful, and too good not to overorder. Taking home leftovers feels like a little gift to yourself for tomorrow.

Barú is, quite literally, a Caribbean island tucked into downtown Detroit. Even as Michigan winter approaches, it’s a place that makes you feel like the sun is still shining.

We’ve always loved a well-crafted tasting menu. It’s the purest way to experience a chef’s perspective. When it’s done right, every course builds quietly and intentionally into something cohesive and memorable.

Oak & Reel’s Fall Tasting Menu is exactly that. Focused, seasonal, and executed with precision, it’s easily one of our favorites, so much so, we’ve already enjoyed it twice.

The Pizzette Verde is playful and delicious, but “The Alternative First Course”, focaccia with stracciatella and Siberian sturgeon caviar, stole the show. JFD will always lean toward the caviar option.

Oak & Reel continues to set the bar for tasting menus in Detroit. We look forward to each new one as much as the last.
