Chicago
We will happily make the drive from metro Detroit to Chicago for exceptional food, but especially for Mexican done with soul, style, and sincerity. Cariño delivered all of that and more.
Tucked in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, Cariño feels like an open invitation into something personal. And indeed, the name says it all. Cariño, meaning “affection” in Spanish, permeates every aspect of the experience from the thoughtful design to the vibrant dishes to the warm, attentive service.
The menu was both playful and sophisticated, filled with flavors that were bold, elegant, and deeply satisfying. We started with chips and salsa and crispy chicharrón, followed by a round of Micheladas that hit every note. Each course that followed was beautifully presented: Aguachile, ravioli, tacos dorados, empanadas, and a vibrant tostada. For mains, the black cod and lamb stood out with their balance of richness and nuance. We ended with a fun chamoyada, refreshing pineapple, and a decadent chocolate dessert. Every dish reflected a deep respect for Mexican cuisine, with a contemporary twist.
One of our favorite moments of the evening was when Emma learned about a new fruit, chayote and the team kindly gifted her one to take home. That small gesture sparked a whole conversation about food, flavor, and culture. Moments like these engage young diners and inspire them to explore new tastes. Cariño didn’t just serve dinner they sparked curiosity.
Chicago is filled with stellar dining options, but Cariño stands out not only for its culinary excellence but for the heart behind it. The kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with dining in the first place.
