Ghee Miami

We headed to Miami for work, and to our delight, our trip happened to coincide with Miami Spice. Even better, it gave us the perfect excuse to finally make our way to Ghee Indian Kitchen in Wynwood.

From the moment we walked in, we loved the energy. Ghee is welcoming, fun, and upbeat without trying too hard, and the staff was incredibly attentive throughout the evening. But as much as we enjoyed the atmosphere, the food took the experience to an entirely different level.

Led by Chef Niven Patel, Ghee does not currently hold a Michelin star, but it has repeatedly been recognized by the Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand, an award given to restaurants offering excellent food at a great value. After our dinner, it was very easy to understand the recognition.

Since we were visiting for the first time, we opted for the tasting menu. When you are somewhere new and want to try as much as possible, this is always our preferred route and at Ghee, it was absolutely the right decision.

The first course was almost a tour of the menu on its own: Green Papaya Salad, Yellowfin Tuna Bhel, Crispy Broccoli, Samosa Chaat, and Potato Dosa. We loved the progression. It started bright and refreshing with the Green Papaya Salad and gradually became richer and more indulgent, ending with the Potato Dosa.

The Yellowfin Tuna Bhel was a standout. Bhel is traditionally an Indian street-food snack built around puffed rice, chutneys, vegetables, and plenty of texture. Adding yellowfin tuna gave it a completely different dimension while still keeping all those contrasting flavors and textures that make the dish so interesting.

Then came what we jokingly started referring to as the “naan course,” and this was where the table became completely covered with food. Chicken Tikka Masala, Kerala Lamb, Dal Makhani, Saag Paneer, Turmeric Marinated Shrimp, Ghee Naan, and Basmati Rice all arrived for us to share.

The Chicken Tikka Masala and Kerala Lamb were familiar dishes, but they were executed beautifully deeply flavorful, comforting. The Dal Makhani was rich and slow-cooked, the Saag Paneer brought another layer of warmth to the table, and the Turmeric Marinated Shrimp added a lighter contrast to some of the richer dishes.

And, of course, there was the Ghee Naan. There is something particularly satisfying about having a table filled with curries, sauces, rice, and warm naan and simply working your way through all of it. No sauce was going to waste at our table.

Dessert brought Sticky Date Cake and Gulab Jamun, which was exactly the sweet ending we needed after such a generous meal.

We had a wonderful dinner and a genuinely great experience at Ghee. The restaurant manages to be approachable and lively while serving food with serious flavor. It is the kind of place that works just as well for someone already familiar with Indian cuisine as it does for someone looking to explore it more.
